You assign an address to an interface by specifying the address when configuring the protocol family. For the inet or inet6 family, configure the interface IP address. For the iso family, configure one or more addresses for the loopback interface. For the cccethernet-switchingtccmplstnpand vpls families, you never configure an address. The point-to-point PPP address is taken from the loopback interface address that has the primary attribute. When the loopback interface is configured as an unnumbered interface, it takes the primary address from the donor interface.

To configure an IPv4 address on routers and switches running Junos OS, use the interface interface-name unit number family inet address a. You can configure the same IPv4 address on multiple physical interfaces. When you assign the same IPv4 address to multiple physical interfaces, the operational behavior of those interfaces differs, depending on whether they are implicitly or explicitly point-to-point.

By default, all interfaces are assumed to be point-to-point PPP interfaces. For all interfaces except aggregated Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet, you can explicitly configure an interface to be a point-to-point connection. If you configure the same IP address on multiple interfaces in the same routing instance, Junos OS uses only the first configuration.

The remaining IP address configurations are ignored, leaving some interfaces without an assigned address. Interfaces without an assigned address cannot be used as a donor interface for an unnumbered Ethernet interface.

To configure an IPv6 address on routers and switches running Junos OS, use the interface interface-name unit number family inet6 address aaaa : bbbb You represent IP version 6 IPv6 addresses in hexadecimal notation using a colon-separated list of bit values.

The double colon :: represents all bits set to 0. You must manually configure the router or switch advertisement and advertise the default prefix for autoconfiguration to work on a specific interface.

The broadcast address must have a host portion of either all ones or all zeros. You cannot specify the addresses 0.

Hello everybody I am relatively new to networking and I am currently managing a few EX switches.

I need to find to which port a machine is connected to, but all I have is an IP Address. I know that I can use show ethernet-switching table brief but unfortunately I do not have the MAC address.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: juniper switch ex how to find port from ip address? You need to find the entry for that IP address in the ARP table on whatever device s are terminating the L3 connectivity for that subnet.

That will then give you the MAC address that you can look up in the ethernet-swtiching-table on the EX Then from the MAC you can find the port. The main one is in the ARP table of the router for that subnet.

The router could be the EX itself or a different device in the network. If the router runs Junos: show arp hostname a. When you have time, consider looking into running something like Netdisco against your switches and routers. Without a MAC, it's not straightforward. It would be a lot easier if you could find the MAC address from the router. Can you really not do that? Or if you can get to the host, just unplug then re-attach the host, then look in the switch logs for which port just came up.

On a device running Junos, the command would be "show arp". Then you can use "show ethernet-switching table brief" on the EX as you mentioned before. This has now been resolved. Managed to get access to the core switch and used the arp table.

Just to throw it out there, I created the attached op script a while ago to do this in a small office environment. It does require having a family inet address on the switch so don't forget your firewall filters to prevent cross-vlan contamination!

Next on my todo list was for it to run through a list of switches running the get-ethernet-switching-table-information remotely, so that it could be used on a larger LAN without inet addressing each switch. And inet6, of course. Thanks, Jed.

First, I'd like to say that all of the advice in this thread is solid. Now, with that said, read on for a way to do this without logging into devices yourself. Looks like the mailing list ate your attachment. Assuming that's the case, you also need py-junos-eznc. I figured this would be a halfway decent, somewhat easy-to-understand script that anyone could use easily. The switches are done in "parallel" after the gateway is done.

There's a minor "issue" in that if the gateway is also one of the switches, you'll end up connecting to it twice.

Not a big deal to me, but just for clarity. It has been took for ages to get diplayed the following output. Like ex is not gonna response And secondly what reason 2 different ip addresses in associated dhcp pool in the same vlan is assigning to the same machine windows?

Any ideas and approaches to fix this predicument duplicated ip issues Try to check " show arp no-resolve match 7f:9e " and confirm if that's faster?

By default, system tries to resolve the corresponding hostname. If this solves your problem, please mark this post as "Accepted Solution. Dhcp sits on the ex L3 device Yes you are right Thanks for this tip Because user needs to know that specific ip addr all the time? Hope this helps. Hot Network Questions. Question feed.By Walter J. Goralski, Cathy Gadecki, Michael Bushong. Network devices have network interfaces, usually more than one.

Routers can have literally hundreds and so can large switches. The Junos OS supports many types of interfaces. To understand the command used to configure a network interface carrying user traffic, it helps to have an overview of the options available in the set interface command in Junos.

One of the ways to explore the options available in set interface is to use the show interfaces terse command:. All of the interface types supported in Junos have a two-letter text identifier. Some of the most often used supported interface types are:. The numbers following the interface type such as ge- refer to the chassis slot, processor, and port on which the interface is sending and receiving bits. The Local column in the output lists the interface addresses.

You set the protocol supported on the interface with the family keyword, and the protocol can be one or more of the more common families such as these this is not an exhaustive list :. Specify a bit IPv4 prefix, followed by a slash and the prefix length. Specify a bit IPv6 prefix, followed by a slash and the prefix length.

In this example, the IPv4 address How to Configure Interfaces on Junos Devices. He has worked in the networking field for more than 40 years.

Policed Discards Frames that the incoming packet match code discarded because they were not recognized or of interest. L3 incompletes This counter is incremented when the incoming packet fails Layer 3 usually IPv4 sanity checks of the header. For example, a frame with less than 20 bytes of available IP header would be discarded and this counter would be incremented.

L2 mismatch timeouts Count of malformed or short packets that cause the incoming packet handler to discard the frame as unreadable.

The value in this field should always be 0. If it increments, the PIC is broken. Carrier transitions Number of times the interface has gone from down to up. This number should not increment quickly, increasing, for example, only when the cable is unplugged or the far end system is powered down and up. If it does increment quickly perhaps, 1 every 10 secondsthen something is broken check the cable, the far end system, or the PIC. Errors Sum of the outgoing frame aborts and FCS errors.

Aged packets Number of packets that remained in shared packet SDRAM for so long that the system automatically purged them. The value in this field should never increment. If it does, it is most likely a software bug or possible broken hardware.

Specific information about the physical device. Possible values are described in Device Flags Field. Information about the DSU configuration. Specific information about the interface. Possible values are described in Interface Flags Field.
